The problem of illiteracy in the 21st century is higher than ever, especially in third world countries. Although technology and the economy are moving forward, unfortunately, in Trinidad backwardness and educational deficits affect every second citizen. The problem really affects entire Caribbean islands, but I will describe what it looks like in Trinidad, as this is part of my project.
Illiteracy in Trinidad is comparable to the scale of crimes. I can say that illiteracy is even greater than criminal acts, murders and thefts. Every citizen of this island complains that the lawlessness and the bestial behavior of the thugs, sow a huge terror among the inhabitants. Everyone complains about politicians that they are guilty of this situation because they are not doing anything specific about it! And if they would reverse the role and ask the locals: why they did not try to change when they were younger; why they did not motivate themselves and others in professional achievements; why they stopped education at the age of 13 and began sexual life; why they do not motivate their children to finish their education; why they raise their children into this sick tradition and force them to be an adults when they are still children; why they do not help their children develop their wings and become someone better? I could ask so forever, but Trini people do not like to read long stories so I'll take it on hold...
When I talked with people in Trinidad, I could sense their desire for liberation and a great interest in a better life. I could say that fear of the unknown wins and they remain at the same dead end. They can not break down and take a chance, so I do not know if this is a result of laziness, comfort and maybe just ignorance. Trini people are very confused and do not really know any values. For them famous brands of shoes and clothes - the type like Adidas, Nike, Jordan, Clark - are the highest values of life. Satisfaction is that a woman is sleeping with her friend's husband. Recognition is when a guy gets called Bad Boy (equivalent thug, dealer and gang leader) then the parents force their daughters to impose to him because he has money and he will protect her being. Such a mentality does not positively affect development, and certainly does not bode a great future.
